A powerful argument for wearing a mask, in visual form

#COVID-19  #Statistics #CDC  #Coronavirus Despite the clear opposition to masks within the Trump White House and among its allies, Americans of all political stripes overwhelmingly support their use as a public health measure and say they wear them whenever they’re in public. Still, there are significant differences in mask-use rates at the state level. And data from Carnegie Mellon’s CovidCast, an academic project tracking real-time coronavirus statistics, yields a particularly vivid illustration of how mask usage influences the prevalence of covid-19 symptoms in a given area. Take a look. For all 50 states plus D.C., this chart plots the percentage of state residents who say they wear a mask in public all or most of the time (on the horizontal axis) and the percentage who say they know someone in their community with virus symptoms (on the vertical axis). If you’re curious about the exact numbers for your state, there’s a table at the bottom of this article. Take Wyoming and South

How to write good.....

#Writing #FrankLVisco #HowToWriteGood #WilliamSafire How To Write Good (by Frank L. Visco and William Safire) These two sets of rules about writing are engrossing. Do take a look! The first set of rules was written by Frank L. Visco and originally published in the June 1986 issue of Writers' digest. It is available online at Plain Language. My several years in the word game have learnt me several rules: 1. Avoid Alliteration. Always. 2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with. 3. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They’re old hat.) 4. Employ the vernacular. 5. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc. 6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary. 7. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive. 8. Contractions aren't necessary. 9. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos. 10. One should never generalize. 11. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.” 12. Comparisons are as ba

12-year-old prodigy set to study aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech

#GeorgiaTech #Aerospace #ChildProdigy A preteen prodigy who mastered fractions while still in diapers is now set to tackle aerospace engineering at prestigious Georgia Tech University, according to a new report. At just 12-years-old, Caleb Anderson astonished professors at the college with his command of advanced concepts and is expected to earn admission after heavy recruitment. “I just grasp information quickly,” Anderson understatedly told CBS in an interview. At only nine months, he had developed a command of sign language. At one, he began reading.  And while most of his peers were still chucking Cheerios, Anderson was able to comprehend fractions. “I have this distinct memory of going to a first-grade class and learning there, and everyone was way taller than me, because, you know, I was two,” he said. “I could barely walk.” But the fast track also presented its problems. Anderson said his middle school peers didn’t welcome their younger classmates and even teased him for

Mapping How Americans Talk - Soda vs. Pop vs. Coke

#Coke #HarvardDialectSurvey #Pop #Soda What's your general term for a sweetened carbonated beverage? What word or words do you use to address a group of two or more people? What do you call it when the rain falls while the sun is shining? Former Harvard professor Bert Vaux asked tens of thousands of people across the U.S. these questions and released the results as the 2003 Harvard Dialect Survey. The data are fascinating; they reveal patterns of migration, unexpected linguistic kinships between regions, and the awesome variety of words we say and how we say them. The study has wormed its way into popular consciousness and periodically morphs into a meme (just search "accent tag" on YouTube). Last summer, North Carolina State University graduate student Joshua Katz turned Vaux's geographical data into a set of stunning heat maps that went viral. For the video above, we called people across the country to ask them a few of Vaux's questions, then layered

Here’s why a happy show like ‘Sesame Street’ wanted an ornery character like Oscar the Grouch

#JimHenson #OscartheGrouch #SesameStreet  He’s green, he lives in a trash can and he’s always waking up on the wrong side of the bed. His name is Oscar the Grouch, and even people who watched “Sesame Street” as kids might find him a bit confounding. Why is he green? How did he choose his home? And why’s he in such a bad mood? The answer lies with Caroll Spinney, the performer behind the roles of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, who announced his retirement from the show on Monday after almost 50 years. (Fellow puppeteer Eric Jacobson, who plays Miss Piggy, Grover and Bert will take the reins.) Spinney was introduced to the characters when “Sesame Street” creator Jim Henson called him up in the early 1960s. “[Henson] said, ‘Why don’t you come down to New York and talk about the Muppets?’” Spinney told NPR in 2003. “'I have some characters I want to build. One is a tall, funny-looking bird and the other’s going to be this grouchy character who’s going to live in a pile

Filling A Plus-Size Fashion Void On ‘Shrill’

#Shrill #AidyBryant #Hulu #SNL Aidy Bryant obviously isn’t the same person as Annie, the character she plays on “Shrill,” but the two have at least one thing in common: enviable fashion sense. On the Hulu show, aspiring writer Annie dons cute dresses with eye-catching patterns or buttoned-up collared shirts as she handles the blows of life in Portland, Oregon. It’s a kind of easy, feminine style that’s not a far cry from the vibe seen on “ Saturday Night Live ” star Bryant’s Instagram or in her red carpet choices .  “Originally, I was just like, ‘Oh my God, she, just in her own life, has such great fashion,’” said “Shrill” costume designer Amanda Needham of Bryant. She described finding Annie’s style as a “collaboration” with the actress, mixing Bryant’s IRL look with “cool girl, Portland, poppy colors, really exciting moments.” But there was one problem: A lot of the looks that Needham had in mind didn’t exist. At least, not in Bryant’s size.  For a scene in
