Your Inner Critical Voice

#Negativevoice  #innercriticalvoice #innercritic #Introspection #Psychotherapy #MentalHealth #BlackTherapist #Triple5LightTherapy  Our inner voice performs all kinds of important tasks—but when it gets negative, it can be hard to turn off. Ethan Kross, a psychologist and neuroscientist who studies introspection, has a solution. By Clay Skipper- January 24, 2022 We’ve all got a voice in our head. (Maybe you can hear yours, right now, reading these words.) And though you’re intimately familiar with that inner voice, since it talks to you all day long, you might be surprised to learn just how incessant it is. According to one study, it can spew up to four thousand words a minute. If you’re awake for sixteen hours, that’s more than 3.8 million words every day. That’s because that voice does so much for you: It helps you keep information in your head (remembering, say, a phone number or items on a grocery list), simulates and plans for upcoming events, like a date or an interview, coaches y

The Unique Benefits of Teletherapy.

#BlackTherapist #Teletherapy #Triple5LightTherapy.com #AfricanAmerican #Therapist  b y   Margarita Tartakovsky, M.S. Teletherapy is seen as an inferior alternative to in-person therapy. But while it has some drawbacks, online therapy has plenty of pluses, too. First the drawbacks: Some clients miss their therapist’s office, which they associate with safety and healing, said  Jodi Aman , LCSW, a psychotherapist in Rochester, N.Y. Technical difficulties—from poor internet connections to visibility issues–can interrupt sessions. Finding a private, quiet space at home can be challenging. Still, many people prefer teletherapy. As psychologist  Regine Galanti , Ph.D, pointed out, the biggest myth about teletherapy is that it’s “a plan B approach.” Many of Galanti’s clients have been doing online sessions for years. Her teen clients, in particular, like attending therapy in their own space. Teletherapy is also convenient. “[I]t removes time barriers for people to physically attend an appointm

Seven Negative Outcomes of Perfectionism

#Perfection #Perfectionism #Procrastination #Disappointment #Triple5LightTherapy #BlackTherapist #Therapy   The Adverse Effects of Perfectionism Perfection may seem noble, but it can do more damage than good when pursued obsessively. Let’s take a look at seven possible tragic outcomes of perfectionism. Stress: Striving for perfection creates enormous psychic pressure that can trigger psychosomatic symptoms such as chronic fatigue, anxiety, and restlessness. Procrastination: Deadlines come and go; nothing ever feels good enough. You fail to complete projects; you’re never content with your work. Eventually, if satisfaction remains elusive, you may abandon your efforts entirely. Disappointment: Your self-esteem takes a big hit with so many incomplete tasks and critical thoughts. You rarely experience the esteem-boosting burst of satisfaction and pride that comes with a well-done job. Self-critical thoughts: You fault yourself relentlessly. Chronic self-criticism fuels anxiety and hopel

Teens Turn to TikTok in Search of a Mental Health Diagnosis

By Christina Caron Oct. 29, 2022 #tiktok #diagnosis #MentaHealth #BlackMaleTherapist #Psychotherapy #TripleLight.com #AfricanAmericantherapist #BlackTherapist About a year into the pandemic, Kianna, a high school student in Baltimore, was feeling increasingly isolated. While sitting alone in her bedroom there was too much time to think, she said, so sometimes she would fixate on her seclusion or start critiquing her appearance. “I remember just being on TikTok for hours during my day,” added Kianna, 17, who asked to be referred to by only her first name when speaking about her mental health. “That’s when my self-esteem started declining.” At the time, in early 2021, her 10th grade classes were virtual, and she had begun texting with her friends instead of talking to them. Her anxiety bred headaches, poor sleep and the odd feeling of living outside of her body. Then, she started seeing videos on TikTok about depersonalization disorder, a type of dissociative condition that can make peop

What Am I Doing to My Kid When I Yell? (video)

#Yelling #Children #Parents #Communication #Triple5LightTherapy.com #BlackTherapist #Psychotherapy #LGBTAffirmingTherapy When kids misbehave, yelling feels like a natural response, particularly if parents are stressed out and their tolerance for nonsense has worn thin. The messiness and monotony of parenting requires extreme patience, and yelling is a whole lot easier and more instinctive than pausing to react calmly. Many parents find themselves shouting at their children without really knowing why. But, despite the fact that yelling at your kids feels like a release, a form of discipline, and maybe the only way to get their attention, it’s important to understand the psychological effects that yelling at kids can have. As provocative as some behaviors may seem, little kids simply don’t have the emotional sophistication to fully understand adult frustration. And the psychological effects of yelling at toddlers repeatedly can be long-term, with the potential to change the way th

3 Things Good Listeners Consistently Do

#Listening #Silence #Reflection #Open-Ended-Questions #Triple5LightTherapy.com #BlackTherapist #Psychotherapy #LGBTAffirmingTherapy Posted Oct 03, 2020 In the Fall of 2016, I was a fresh graduate of the exercise science master’s program at SUNY Cortland where I was also teaching and coaching strength and conditioning. Frankly, I was in a rut. My relationship with my girlfriend was on the verge of collapsing and I was realizing I did not have upward mobility in my current position. The rut came to a head when I received a text from my girlfriend saying we needed to talk. My stomach dropped. I couldn’t focus. I sent a message to my advisor, Dr. Lind, who was a counselor before he was an exercise psychologist. “Can we talk?” I asked. He told me to come over to his office. I mustered together every ounce of strength I had. “Don’t you cry, whatever you do, don’t you cry” I said to myself. Dr. Lind told me to sit down. I don’t remember if I spoke first or just cried. Sentences were interrupt

5 exercises to help you build more empathy (video)

Angus Grieg #JamilZaki #Connection #Empathy #Human #Psychology #Psychotherapy #MentalHealth #BlackTherapist #Triple5LightTherapy Empathy — or understanding the thoughts and feelings of the people around us — is one of the most important and most trying parts of being a social creature.   But what exactly is empathy? And crucially, can we have more? Stanford psychology professor  Jamil Zaki PhD , director of the Social Neuroscience Laboratory there, studies these very questions. In a TEDxMarin talk, he says that human empathy is actually a skill that can be developed rather than a fixed trait. “Empathy is a simple word for a complex idea,” he explains. “Research psychologists understand empathy as an umbrella terms for multiple ways that we respond to other people’s emotions.” Why is empathy so important?  Some of the reasons are more obvious: “It inspires us to help family members, friends, and strangers,” says Dr. Zaki. “It helps us see past differences and allows us to see others
