What Am I Doing to My Kid When I Yell? (video)

#Yelling #Children #Parents #Communication #Triple5LightTherapy.com #BlackTherapist #Psychotherapy #LGBTAffirmingTherapy When kids misbehave, yelling feels like a natural response, particularly if parents are stressed out and their tolerance for nonsense has worn thin. The messiness and monotony of parenting requires extreme patience, and yelling is a whole lot easier and more instinctive than pausing to react calmly. Many parents find themselves shouting at their children without really knowing why. But, despite the fact that yelling at your kids feels like a release, a form of discipline, and maybe the only way to get their attention, it’s important to understand the psychological effects that yelling at kids can have. As provocative as some behaviors may seem, little kids simply don’t have the emotional sophistication to fully understand adult frustration. And the psychological effects of yelling at toddlers repeatedly can be l...

The Couch in Rainbow Colors: ‘L.G.B.T.-Affirming’ Therapy

A collage on gay identity in the office of Joy Turek, the psychology chairwoman at Antioch, made by students in a class Dr. Turek teaches.CreditKendrick Brinson for The New York Times By Casey Schwartz , NY Times July 13th, 2016 CULVER CITY, Calif. — “Are we ready to expose ourselves?” J. D. Fuller asked, halfway through the graduate-level psychology class she teaches on Tuesday nights at Antioch University. Ms. Fuller’s students needed no further prompting. They began shedding layers, revealing what they’d been wearing underneath: T-shirts on which they had scrawled names, labels, and insults in Magic Marker ink. Around the room, the collection was various: “Sissy,” “AIDS,” “pedophile,” “pervert,” “fag,” “str8t-acting,” “socialite,” “fat,” “bland,” “emotionally white,” “immigrant,” “stupid American.” Welcome to L.G.B.T. Multicultural Counseling and Mental Health, one of the required classes in Antioch’s specialized course of training. The students, ranging in age from 20-...

3 Things Good Listeners Consistently Do

#Listening #Silence #Reflection #Open-Ended-Questions #Triple5LightTherapy.com #BlackTherapist #Psychotherapy #LGBTAffirmingTherapy Posted Oct 03, 2020 In the Fall of 2016, I was a fresh graduate of the exercise science master’s program at SUNY Cortland where I was also teaching and coaching strength and conditioning. Frankly, I was in a rut. My relationship with my girlfriend was on the verge of collapsing and I was realizing I did not have upward mobility in my current position. The rut came to a head when I received a text from my girlfriend saying we needed to talk. My stomach dropped. I couldn’t focus. I sent a message to my advisor, Dr. Lind, who was a counselor before he was an exercise psychologist. “Can we talk?” I asked. He told me to come over to his office. I mustered together every ounce of strength I had. “Don’t you cry, whatever you do, don’t you cry” I said to myself. Dr. Lind told me to sit down. I don’t remember if I spoke first or just cried. 5 Visualizations to Help Lessen Anxiety

#Anxiety #MentaHealth #Therapy #BlackMaleTherapist #AfricanAmericantherapist #Triple5LightTherapy #ABLM #BLM #Latin #Asian #NativeAmerican #White #POC #LGBTAffirmingTherapy With many surveys showing that   anxiety is at heightened levels ever since the advent of the  COVID-19  pandemic, the struggle to manage  stress  is a common one. In my practice, I am seeing people identify with feeling overwhelmed, pessimistic, and frazzled. These feelings are compounded by a sense of uncertainty about the future, and no clear sense of when our daily lives' disruptions will no longer be so significant.  It's important to understand that stress—and by which I mean the classic definition of the stress response, which is your reaction to a stressor (a trigger)—is multi-faceted. It involves not just your thoughts, but your emotions, your behavior, and your body. When we feel like we are under a chronic stress response, or one that is particularly severe or unrelenti...
