Brené Brown: The Call to Courage

#BrenéBrown #TheCalltoCourage  #Vulnerability #Shame  #Empathy #Netflix  Netflix taught fans the magic of tidying up physical clutter in their lives through Marie Kondo's hit show, and now it's time to Spring clean the soul with the help of Brené Brown. The University of Houston research professor and renowned social scientist "The Call to Courage" Stream the special on Netflix. In college, I relied pretty heavily on Brené Brown's TEDx Houston Talk "The Power of Vulnerability" to get me through the day-to-day. Her video psyched me up before job interviews, reassured me when I failed, and calmed me when I felt overwhelmed with anxiety. I don't think I'm alone in my respect for Brown — her address is one of the top five most viewed TED Talks ever, with 38 million. She has become a go-to source on the study of shame, empathy, vulnerability, and (of course) courage, the focus of her Netflix special. The special, filmed in front of a liv

Kate Bush's "50 Words for Snow"

#50WordsforSnow #KateBush From up on that hill, perhaps wearing a capelet over a flowy Victorian gown, Kate Bush has been regarded as a spirit saint of fearless individuality by a generation of musicians such as Björk and Tori Amos as well as younger mystics-in-training such as Florence Welch, Leslie Feist and Bat for Lashes. All that adoration in the ether must’ve stirred the reclusive British singer-songwriter to create not just one album this year — “Director’s Cut,” a reinterpretation of songs from “The Sensual World” and “The Red Shoes” — but also a second one, “50 Words for Snow,” an art-song cycle that veers from delicate to blustery but always with a sheen of elegance.  Bush grounds her songs in the permafrost of winter, with her piano work sounding like the first stirrings after a cold snap. “Among Angels” could be the soundtrack for plants stretching toward the new spring sun, but as much as it’s connected to the natural world, the song twinkles with something more et

The Six Laws of Technology Everyone Should Know

#Invention #MelvinKranzberg #Technology #Tech, Three decades ago, a historian  wrote six laws  to explain society’s unease with the power and pervasiveness of technology. Though based on historical examples taken from the Cold War, the laws read as a cheat sheet for explaining our era of Facebook, Google, the iPhone, and FOMO. You’ve probably never heard of these principles or their author, Melvin Kranzberg, a professor of the history of technology at Georgia Institute of Technology who  died in 1995 . What’s a bigger shame is that most of the innovators today, who are building the services and tools that have upended society, don’t know them, either? Fortunately, the laws have been passed down by a small group of technologists who say they have profoundly impacted their thinking. The text should serve as a foundation—something like a Hippocratic oath—for all people who build things. 1. ‘Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral’ Melvin Kranzberg in th

Brain freeze: Why ice cream makes some scream

#BrainFreeze,#Popsicle #Slush  #IceCream  Most people have likely experienced brain freeze — the debilitating, instantaneous pain in the temples after eating something frozen — but researchers didn't really understand what causes it, until now. Previous studies have found that migraine sufferers are actually more likely to get brain freeze than people who don't get migraines. Because of this, the researchers thought the two might share some kind of common mechanism or cause, so they decided to use brain freeze to study migraines. Headaches like migraines are difficult to study because they are unpredictable. Researchers aren't able to monitor a whole one from start to finish in the lab. They can give drugs to induce migraines, but those can also have side effects that interfere with the results. Brain freeze can quickly and easily be used to start a headache in the lab, and it also ends quickly, which makes monitoring the entire event easy. The researchers brou

Gay Men of Color, Internalized Homophobia, Race, and Religion ( +YouTube Video)

#InternalizedHomophobia #Intersectionality  #LGBTQ  #Race  #Religion  #DownLow #Latino  #Latinx  #Black  #AfricanAmerican Intersectionality explains how the notion of social injustice, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and belief-based bigotry such as religion are not independent of one another; instead, they are interconnected, and thereby reflect an intersection in regards to social relationships.   Although public opinion has shifted in the last 30 years, the social ostracism of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals have helped to reinforce those narrow societal norms. Some individuals may find it harder, to express their authentic self.   According to (Kertzner, Meyer, Frost, & Stirratt, 2009), a person who is a sexual minority will benefit from participating in the gay community and receiving affirmative social standards.  Disclosure of sexual identity increases the opportunity for an individual to identify with the in-group.  Support and acceptance from the in-group correl
