The Psychology of Hoarding Toilet Paper, Beans & Soup

#Hoarding #PanicBuying #COVID-19 #Anxiety #Emotions #Therapy #Triple5LightTherapy.com By   John M. Grohol, Psy.D. There’s a very good article by Bella DePaulo, Ph.D.  Why Are People Hoarding Toilet Paper?  that dives into the psychology of this behavior. It’s a good question because what we’re seeing are American consumers acting in a seemingly irrational manner in reaction to the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. Panic  buying  is what people do when faced with an imminent disaster, whether it be natural — such as a hurricane or snowstorm — or something else, like the spread of a virus for which there is no effective treatment or vaccine. And while it seems irrational on the surface, it actually has a rational basis. You can also use your attention to deal with anxiety and calm yourself down. Remembering that you have control over where you put your attention is key to managing your anxiety. How do you come back to your sens

20 Common Defense Mechanisms Used for Anxiety

#Anxiety #DefenseMechanisms We all have thoughts, feelings, impulses, and memories that can be difficult to deal with. In some cases, people deal with such feelings by utilizing what is known as defense mechanisms.  These defense mechanisms are unconscious psychological responses that protect people from feelings of anxiety, threats to self-esteem, and things that they don't want to think about or deal with. The term got its start in psychoanalytic therapy, but it has slowly worked its way into the parlance of everyday language. Think of the last time you referred to someone as being "in denial" or accused someone of "rationalizing." Both of these examples refer to a type of defense mechanism. So What Exactly Is a Defense Mechanism? Most notably used by  Sigmund Freud  in his psychoanalytic theory, a defense mechanism is a tactic developed by the ego to protect against anxiety. 2 Defense mechanisms are thought to safeguard the mind
