You've Never seen Waves Like this Before

#Photography #RachaelTalibart  #Waves Photographer Rachael Talibart grew up in West Essex, on England's southeast coast and often went sailing on her father's sailboat in the summer. Her fascination with the sea continued when she became a photographer and her new series Sirens reflects that. Each image is named after a mythological-esque figure. This one is called Niobe Photo. Rachael Talibart Growing up in  southeast England, Rachael Talibart spent several weeks every summer on her father’s sailboat, exploring the coastlines of France and the Netherlands. These family voyages were meant as a vacation, although Talibart never had much fun—she was a "shockingly bad sailor" who was almost constantly seasick. Because her nausea was worse inside the boat, she spent most of her time alone in the cockpit, looking out over the ocean. "I spent ages staring at the waves," she remembers. "I used to imagine creatures in the sea." Talibart , now a

To Defy the United States, Fidel Castro Built the World's Greatest Ice Cream Parlor

#FidelCastro #Cuba #USA #IceCream When authoritarian leaders obsess over a particular food, it can change how a country eats and drinks for generations. This week, we’re looking at five cases of dictator food projects and what they reveal about the power of food. IN THE 1960S, FIDEL CASTRO  faced many challenges by becoming an ideological enemy of the United States. Another was that America maintained the Guantanamo Bay military base, which was capable of sheltering 50 warships, on the southeastern tip of Cuba. But arguably the most vexing issue for Castro, especially on a sweltering summer day in Havana, was the United States cutting off Cuba’s dairy supply. That was a problem, because Casto was obsessed with ice cream. When he was still a young re

US citizens will need to register to visit parts of Europe starting in 2021

#ETIAS , #Schengen , #EuropeanUnion , #ESTA US citizens visiting parts of Europe will need authorization from the European Union come 2021. The Schengen Area is a zone of 26 European countries that do not have internal borders and allow people to move between them freely, including countries such as Spain, France, Greece, Germany, Italy, and Poland. Currently, US citizens can travel to Europe for up to 90 days without any sort of travel authorization. ETIAS will change that. Visa-free travelers, including US citizens, will need to request ETIAS authorization before visiting the Schengen Area. They can complete an application and pay a service fee of 7 euros (about $8) online. The authorization is valid for three years. The United States has a similar system called the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA. "We are aware of the European Union's plan to implement its own travel information and authorization system, similar to the U.S. ESTA, to contri

Dr. Marijuana Pepsi Won't Change Her Name 'To Make Other People Happy'

#DrMarijuanaPepsi #BirthName #Dissertation #BlackNamesinWhiteClassrooms June 22, 2019 7:51 PM ET Ari Shapiro   All Things Considered Marijuana Pepsi's mother told her that her birth name would take her places. She wasn't wrong. After a life spent being mocked for having an unusual name, the 46-year-old seized on her experience to earn a Ph.D. in higher education leadership. Her dissertation focused on unusual names, naturally. As of last week, Marijuana Pepsi is now Dr. Marijuana Pepsi Vandyck. For her dissertation, titled Black Names in White Classrooms: Teacher Behaviors and Student Perceptions, Vandyck interviewed students and concluded that participants "with distinctly black names" were subject to disrespect, stereotypes and low academic and behavioral expectations. This resulted in strained relationships, changes in future career choices and self-esteem issues, spelling fewer educational and economic opportunities for students of co
