What is Compassion?

via GIPHY #Sel-Compassion  #Psychology  #Empathy What is compassion and how is it different from empathy or altruism? The definition of compassion is often confused with that of empathy. Empathy, as defined by researchers, is the visceral or emotional experience of another person’s feelings. It is, in a sense, an automatic mirroring of another’s emotion, like tearing up at a friend’s sadness.  Altruism is an action that benefits someone else. It may or may not be accompanied by empathy or compassion, for example in the case of making a donation for tax purposes. Although these terms are related to compassion, they are not identical.  Compassion often does, of course, involve an empathic response and altruistic behavior. However, compassion is defined as the emotional response when perceiving suffering and involves an authentic desire to help. by Emma M. Seppälä Ph.D.

It’s easy to tell when someone isn’t their usual self, but it’s a lot harder to know what to do to help.

Why The Electoral College Exists

#ElectoralCollege #PopularVote #SupremeCourt Around 138 million people voted in the 2016 election, but 306 people officially elected the president by using their electoral college votes. Here’s why the Electoral College exists. The Supreme Court will decide whether Electoral College voters have a constitutional right to cast ballots for candidates who didn’t win their state’s popular vote, the justices announced in an order on Friday. The justices said they will hear two cases brought by Electoral College voters in Washington state and Colorado who refused to vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016 despite her wins in those states. Like most states, Washington and Colorado require their electors to follow the will of their states’ voters. But those laws are now being challenged by Electoral College voters who argue that such laws are unconstitutional. A decision in the matter is expected by the end of June, ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November. The c...

#Vote #BlackVoters #PopularVote #StudentVoters #VoterSuppression #2020presidentiaelection #Election-Day #Election By Christianna Silva -npr.org As the nation careens into the 2020 presidential election amid a damaged economy and a surging pandemic that has infected more than 9 million people and killed more than 230,000, Americans are facing historic division. The divides have affected the country in myriad ways — even influencing who we choose to engage with. A powerful argument for wearing a mask, in visual form

#COVID-19  #Statistics #CDC  #Coronavirus Despite the clear opposition to masks within the Trump White House and among its allies, Americans of all political stripes overwhelmingly support their use as a public health measure and say they wear them whenever they’re in public. Still, there are significant differences in mask-use rates at the state level. And data from Carnegie Mellon’s CovidCast, an academic project tracking real-time coronavirus statistics, yields a particularly vivid illustration of how mask usage influences the prevalence of covid-19 symptoms in a given area. Take a look. For all 50 states plus D.C., this chart plots the percentage of state residents who say they wear a mask in public all or most of the time (on the horizontal axis) and the percentage who say they know someone in their community with virus symptoms (on the vertical axis). If you’re curious about the exact numbers for your state, there’s a table at the bottom of this article. Take Wyom...
