How to deal with holiday stress: The psychology behind why family time can turn adults into moody teens again

#holidaystress #family #copingmechanism #conflict #Psychology No matter how far away from home we travel, most of us can’t escape our familial history — and the memories that come with it. Along with shopping, gift-wrapping and cookie baking, I’m prepping for the holidays by accepting that family stress may get the best of me. While I haven’t lived at home for over 20 years, conflict around heated topics like politics can make me feel like a misunderstood teen again. Listening calmly and objectively to my parents becomes harder and harder and I interrupt more. Once, I even rolled my eyes at my mom like a pouty adolescent. My behavior, however, isn’t meant to be disrespectful or cruel, even though it might look that way. It’s actually a normal coping mechanism known as regression. As a psychologist, I’ve heard hundreds of family tales similar to mine. For many of us, reuniting with loved ones during the holidays can feel like psychological time travel. There’s a rea...

New Drug for Depression, Derived From Ketamine, Is Approved

#Esketamine #FDA #Ketamine #Depression The FDA has approved esketamine for clinical use in cases of treatment-resistant depression, or depression that fails to respond to more than one antidepressant medication. Esketamine is a molecule derived from the anesthetic ketamine, which has itself gained steam as a novel depression treatment. The approval, which the agency announced on March 5, was widely expected after an advisory panel recommended 14 to 2 in favor in early February. But the decision is significant, the drug’s developers say, because unlike other antidepressants on the market, esketamine works through the brain’s glutamate pathways—making it the first new mechanism of action approved by the FDA to treat depression in 30 years. “This really promises a completely new and different treatment for many patients,” says David Hough, a psychiatrist who led the clinical trials of esketamine for Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the pharmaceutical arm of Johnson and Johnson and the d...

How The Apollo Theater Became America's Most Important Venue

#TheApolloTheater #Harlem #AmateurNight  Long before Randy Jackson's it’s-a-no-from-me-dawged judging on  American Idol , and those spinning chairs on  The Voice  decided the futures of intrepid crooners, there was the weekly Amateur Night at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. Beginning a little over 80 years ago, it's the longest running talent show in the world, where acts come from across the country to compete for the admiration of the Apollo’s notoriously hard-to-please crowd. The stakes? If you beat everyone out, you join a list of other winners such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, and the Jackson 5. And if the theater doesn’t like you, you’re booed (like hemorrhaging-sports-fan-booed), and swept off the stage by a guy called “the executioner.” Yeah, it’s a little more dam aging than a Simon Cowell scowl. Though, as it is with the few other American venues that share the Apollo’s history and cultural perma-relevance, it’s a tradition. A proud one, too—e...
